DeCrane is at EBACE'10 in High Def

May 6, 2010

DeCrane Aerospace division Audio International is pumping up the sound at EBACE with its AI Platinum HD high-definition system for which deliveries have just begun.

The system provides 1080p resolution via high-speed 3G-SDI in tandem with the high-speed Ethernet control network. According to Audio International, the AI Platinum HD system distributes an uncompressed 3G-SDI high definition video signal to create theater-quality video unaffected by system latency, synchronization issues and the 400 Hz signal interference inherent in some other entertainment systems.

The system was designed with in-system programming that offers the ability to plug into a system port for software downloads. Additional features include a built-in system self-test, as well as remote diagnostic analysis for field service applications.

Audio International has also developed a Blu-ray player and a wide array of high-definition LCD monitors to interface with the AI Platinum HD configuration.

In the meantime, Audio International continues to expand its customer support structure in Europe, this time with the addition of Oakenhurst Aircraft Services as an authorized service and repair facility.

Located at Rayleigh Essex in the UK, Oakenhurst offers an extension of Audio International’s warranty advance replacement program. The program allows eligible customers to request available warranty replacement units to further minimize the inconvenience of returning a unit for service.

Meanwhile, here at EBACE, another DeCrane business Carl F. Booth Veneers announced the addition of three new products: RealRock, NanoTrim, EliteVeneer and SoftTouch. The RealRock collection consists of 11 different flexible, lightweight real stone coverings appropriate for floor or counter top coverings. NanoTrim is a more flexible hardwood substitute with veneer wrapping. Elite Veneer combines a decorative veneer face material and aluminum backing, providing a weight savings over the typical three-ply wood standard product. It also has a favorable burn characteristic without the use of chemical treatment. SoftTouch is a leather-like, in-mold coating the costs less and weighs less than leather, but still has the same, rich appearance.

Carl F. Booth was recently awarded the Forest Stewardship Council’s Chain of Custody Certification. Wood products bearing this certification are verified to have been “harvested in a responsible manner from managed forests under socially responsible circumstances.”

EBACE: DeCrane promotes its integrated credentials

By Kate Sarsfield

DeCrane Aerospace is out in force at EBACE to promote itself as a fully integrated manufacturer and supplier of cabin products and engineering solutions for business aircraft.

Speaking at the show to Flight Evening News, Heidi McNary, DeCrane's vice- president of sales and marketing, said: "DeCrane has long been regarded as a large company made up of a number of loosely affiliated businesses, but we are trying to change that perception."

As a visible and tangible example of some of the products available across its six divisions, the US company is showcasing an integrated cabin mock-up at EBACE that includes recently launched lightweight, decorative coverings, fabrics and veneers, a high-definition television and cabin management system.

"People may know, for example, that we supply seats [through DeCrane Aircraft Seating] and cabinets [through Precision Pattern], but don't know that we do in-flight entertainment systems [through Audio International] and auxiliary fuel tanks [through PATS]," said McNary. "We have to raise awareness of the DeCrane family so customers can see what we do."

DeCrane has been "working behind the curtains" for around two years, McNary said, "to establish and implement a core strategy, cross sell products and training and instil a value proposition across the company. Now we have all the pieces in place."  As part of this strategy, DeCrane is developing and maintaining "a robust pipeline of products" to stimulate and retain customer interest. "The cabin interiors market is very competitive so we are continually looking to develop new products that will appeal to both OEMs and end users," said McNary.

The approval of the OEMs is a key component of DeCrane's drive to supply full and sub interior kits for new business aircraft. The company supplies the full kits to Embraer for its Lineage 1000 super-large jet and a sub-kit - the full interior excluding the seats - to Cessna for its Mustang entry-level jet.  "We always have our eye on new aircraft platforms and continue to talk to the OEMs," said McNary.
